Some historical events from 1960:

January 1960: Work began on the Aswan High Dam, on the Nile in Egypt. Kenya ended its State of Emergency, after being in force for eight years. The US Navy bathyscaphe Trieste, designed by Dr Piccard, descended to a record depth of 10,750 m /35,820 ft in the Pacific Ocean.

February 1960: The French tested their first atomic bomb in the Sahara. The US nuclear submarine Triton set off to circumnavigate the world underwater. Cuban leader Fidel Castro nationalised all businesses in Cuba. An earthquake killed about 12,000 people in Agadir, Morocco.

April 1960: The US launched the world's first weather satellite, Tiros I. The film epic 'Ben Hur', with Charlton Heston, won a total of ten Oscars. The Civil Rights Bill was passed in the American Senate. American rock star Eddie Cochran died in a car crash while on tour.

May 1960: Gary Powers, in a U2 spy plane, was shot down and captured by the USSR. Princess Margaret married Mr Armstrong-Jones. Leonid Brezhnev became the President of the USSR. 'France', the worlds longest ocean liner, was launched. An earthquake struck Chile, South America.

June 1960: A woman read the BBC national news for the first time. The Soviets walked out on the arms talks with America. The BBC opened its present TV Centre in London. Belgian Congo became an independent state.

July 1960: Ivory Coast, Niger, Upper Volta & Dahomey all became independent. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 5, with two dogs on board.

August 1960: The Ivory Coast became independent from France. A militray coup was staged in Laos, asia. The African country of Chad gained its independence from France. The island of Cyprus became an independent republic. The first oral contraceptive was marketed by the Searle Drug Company in the US.

September 1960: The first live league football match was broadcast on television. A new dance craze, the twist, began in the USA. The first Traffic Wardens apperaed on British streets. The first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise, was launched at Newport, Virginia.

October 1960: Britain launched its first nuclear submarine, the HMS Dreadnought. In Louisville Kentucky, Cassius Clay fought his first profesional bout.

November 1960: J F Kennedy was elected as American president,becoming the youngest ever, at the age of 43 . The 'Oscar' winning Hollywood superstar, Clark Gable, died.

December 1960: Granada Television's long running 'soap', Coronation Street, was first televised. The farthing coin, which had been in use in Great Britain since the 13th century, ceased to be legal tender.
